A couple of weeks ago, I attended a conference. The focus was on how AI and its various use cases are transforming sales and marketing verticals. One of the idea shared in the conference which really struck chord with me was:
”NT + OP = EOP”
New technology + Optimized processes = Enhanced operational Performance.
This kept me thinking and Since then i really wanted to scribble something on this. See how this formulae can be applied to telecom industry. Here is my take on it.
In the rapidly evolving world of telecommunications, staying ahead of the curve is crucial.
NT + OP = EOP ‘New Technology + Optimized Process = Enhanced Operational Performance’ is more relevant than ever. This formula emphasizes the importance of new technology. This equation underscores the importance of not just adopting new technologies but also optimizing processes to fully leverage these advancements.
Not adapting the processes and at the pace with changing technologies can lead to: NT+OP=SOP.
NEW TECHNOLOGY+OLD PROCESSES = SCREWED OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE.
The Telecom Landscape: A Brief Overview
The telecom industry is essential for modern communication. It links billions of people around the globe. It is often seen as a basic need, akin to water or electricity. By the end of 2030 number or connections using 5G will be ca. 6 billion devices. These new telecom generations (2G to 5G, 5G SA, and soon 6G) are being supported by varied use cases. These use cases are speeding up this transition. Network slicing, FWA, Passive IoT, and Edge compute are examples of these use cases.
However, simply using these technologies isn’t enough. Telecom companies also need to improve their processes to boost performance. Let’s compare 2 scenarios where this formulae can make or break this technology implementation.
Scenario 1: NT+OP=Enhanced OP
Some of the New Technology (NT) in Telecom
- 5G Networks: The rollout of 5G,5G SA technology is a game-changer. It offers faster speeds, lower latency, and the ability to connect more devices simultaneously. This technology is the foundation for innovations like smart cities and autonomous vehicles.
- Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI is revolutionizing telecom operations. From predictive maintenance to customer service chatbots, AI is enhancing efficiency and customer satisfaction.
- Internet of Things (IoT): IoT devices are generating vast amounts of data. Telecom companies are leveraging this data to improve network performance and offer new services.
- Cloud and Edge Computing: Cloud technology is quite old. However, it is still enabling telecom companies to scale their operations. They can offer more flexible services. It also supports the deployment of AI and IoT solutions.
Optimized Process (OP) in Telecom
- Network Optimization: With the implementation of AI and machine learning, telecom companies can optimize their networks in real-time. This includes predictive maintenance, which reduces downtime and maintenance costs by predicting equipment failures before they occur.
- Customer Experience Management: AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants are transforming customer service. These tools provide 24/7 support, resolve issues faster, and improve customer satisfaction.
- Dynamic Pricing: Telecom companies are using AI to implement dynamic pricing models. These models adjust prices based on demand, competition, and other factors, maximizing revenue and customer satisfaction.
How Enhanced Operational Performance (EOP) is achieved
When new technology is merged with optimized processes, the result is enhanced operational performance. Here are some real-world examples from the telecom industry:
- Predictive Maintenance: By implementing AI-driven predictive maintenance & analyzing data from IoT sensors, the companies could predict equipment failures. This can allow them to schedule maintenance proactively & reduce downtime by X% and maintenance costs by Y%.
- Customer Service Transformation: When AI-powered chatbots are used to handle customer inquiries. These chatbots can resolve most of the customer issues without human intervention, reducing call center costs and improving customer satisfaction.
- Dynamic Pricing Success: By adopting dynamic pricing models with AI, telcos can highly increase its revenue or ARPU. The AI system adjusted prices based on real-time data, ensuring competitive pricing while maximizing profits.
Scenario 2: NT+OP=Screwed OP
New technology (NT) & Old processes (OP)..leads to..
- 5G Networks: Imagine rolling out of 5G and SA technology with same old routines and management processes. The result? Faster connectivity leads to faster failing rates. The rollout team scrambles to keep up with new faster demands. They are using old tools and processes.
- Artificial Intelligence AI: Driven chatbots for customer calls sounds great. However, they just be singing the same old routines. AI will sound more robotic ”We appreciate your time. Please hold on for 30 min while I connect you to a human.”
- IOT: Devices generate tons of large data. This data has been useful. However, if you’re still using excel sheets to analyze this gold mine, you’re doomed for failure.
…Screwed Operational Performance (SOP).
Here are some examples when old processes are imposed on NT, resulting in utter chaos.
- Predictive maintenance gone wrong: AI driven predictive maintenance can be great help but if the company have old manual processes. AI can predict failures but data getting lost in non agile and red tape can cause more harm and downtime than ever :).
- Fraud detection Chaos: Imagine if a telco implements state of art ML/AI algorithms to detect fraud. But didn’t changed routines and old processes. This setup can flag fraudulent cases. Old Processes will become bottlenecks. This will lead to delayed rectification and more fraud.
The Future of Telecom
The formula NT + OP = EOP is not just a theoretical concept. It is a practical approach. This approach is driving real results in the telecom industry. As technology continues to evolve, telecom companies that embrace this formula will be better positioned to thrive. This will help them in a competitive landscape and industry which has not grown in many decades.
The future of telecom lies in the seamless integration of new technologies with optimized processes. By doing so, companies can enhance their operational performance, deliver superior customer experiences, and drive innovation.
In conclusion, the telecom industry is at a pivotal moment in the history. The adoption of new technologies like 5G, AI, IoT, and cloud computing is essential. However, to truly unlock the potential of these technologies, telecom companies must also optimize their processes.
The formula NT + OP = EOP does provide a roadway for achieving enhanced operational performance.
The future is bright for those who embrace this holistic approach, driving innovation and delivering unparalleled value to their customers.
