”Reimagining Global Priorities – The easy priority of $2.5 trillion/year”

A colorful infographic showcasing the top 10 global problems including climate change, poverty, conflict, education, health crisis, pollution, and unemployment, illustrated with various icons on a blue background.

Earlier this month i attended a training cum conference in central EU. Unlike many other conferences* I’ve attended before, this time I mingled with folks from various EU public agencies. Most of them were from EU regulatory agencies. (*Since, I work in core technology sector, i realized most of the people i interact with are from technology background only. I know very homogenous).

The agenda of the conference covered various topics. Many discussions we had focused on how different EU policies are made. These include GDPR in the EU and upcoming AI regulations & how they are implemented across EU states.

The scale of government spend (aka tax payers money) on these policies were massive. This kept me thinking. WHAT IF this brain power and $ spend is done on something else? Which could have more bang for the buck!

I did quick research & found the top 10 Global problems humanity is facing according to UNESCO. I compared them to the total defense spend of the big economies in the world. Here is quick comparison: Global Spending on Top 10 Issues vs. Defense Budgets

Total Cost to Address Top 10 Global Issues

Global IssueApproximate Annual Cost (USD)
Climate Change$4.3 trillion
Education for All$148 billion
Global Health (Pandemics)$31 billion
Poverty Eradication$175 billion
Biodiversity Loss$711 billion
Water Scarcity$114 billion
Gender Equality$28 billion
Conflict Resolution & Peace building$30 billion
Digital Divide$428 billion
Food Security$330 billion

i.e Total Annual Cost: $6.295 trillion

VS

Total Global Defense Budget (2025) spending of all major economies in 2025 is approximately $2.56 trillion/ yearly.

Diverting the global annual defense budget for 3 years would easily suffice. This diversion could solve the top 10 global issues humanity is facing today. Too easy to foresee and prioritize. Isn’t it? Not really

Here are the 3 biggest reasons preventing governments from reallocating global defense budgets to solve the top 10 global problems, despite the feasibility of addressing these issues within three years of defense spending:

1. Geopolitical Tensions and complex world macros

  • Ongoing conflicts across the globe are pushing countries to throw more money at military spend. Take Russia-ukraine war and the crazy escalations in places like south china sea, the middle east. Many new Nato member states is also pushing the global spend.
  • Governments view defense budgets as essentials for maintaining sovereignty and responding to immediate and long term threats.

2. Military-Industrial lobbying

  • Defense industries are deeply integrated into national economies, providing jobs, technological advancements, and political influence. Reducing military budgets would face resistance from these powerful sectors.
  • In United States alone, where defense spending exceeds $900 billion annually, the military-industrial complex has significant lobbying power.

3. Global Power Dynamics

  • Nations use military spending to assert dominance or influence on the global stage. For example, the U.S., China, and Russia compete for strategic superiority, making reductions politically unviable.
  • Military alliances like NATO also require member states to meet specific defense spending benchmarks (e.g., 2% of GDP), limiting flexibility.

4. Short-Term Priorities vs. Long-Term Goals

  • Addressing global problems like climate change or poverty requires long-term planning. These issues need significant investments. On the other hand, defense spending often addresses immediate threats or crises.
  • Governments prioritize short-term political gains over long-term global benefits due to electoral cycles and public pressure.

Conclusion

In Conclusion, its much easier for any layman to understand and prioritize the yearly defense spend to right place. Reallocating defense budgets theoretically and practically address pressing global challenges.

However, entrenched geopolitical realities and economic dependencies make such a shift highly unlikely. Another thing missing to do right priority is the WILL and INTENTION.

We are technology leaders in this age of social media. We have the tools and vision to urge governments to reshape and prioritize for a better world.

Let’s challenge government and industries to invest and prioritize on problems which secure humanity’s future rather than man-made borders.
